MOSCOW, The Russian Ministry of Defence announced Monday that the 44th Army Corps will conduct “scheduled winter readiness exercises” across the Leningrad and Karelia military districts, according to a statement carried by the ministry’s press service.
The ministry described the manoeuvres as routine and pre-announced under existing transparency arrangements with neighbouring states, noting that this marks the corps’ second such exercise this year. The stated program covers roughly two weeks of mechanized movement, winter logistics resupply, and communications readiness drills across the district.
NATO monitoring stations report troop and equipment movement broadly consistent with the announcement. Several defence analysts, speaking on condition of anonymity, noted that the scale of the current build-up appears larger than comparable winter exercises in prior years both in the number of units involved and in how close activity is concentrated to the Finnish border compared to previous drills.
The Ministry of Defence has not responded to requests for a breakdown of unit strength or exercise duration beyond the initial statement. Independent observers along the border have not yet reported any unusual disruption to civilian rail or road traffic.
