As part of China's Belt and Road Strategy, large investment deals reached the Republic of Sahrani. The Republic redirected much of that funding into its defence industry and, within five years, developed the most advanced military in its region. Russian and Chinese Cold War equipment, alongside American equipment moved through Filipino organised crime groups, rapidly expanded the Sahrani Armed Forces.
When China entered a period of isolation and investment fell, the civilian government granted the PRC a treaty port in northern Sahrani and control of the oil-rich East Island. As defence spending was reduced to support civilian infrastructure, the Sahrani Armed Forces launched a coup. After a three-year civil war, the military took control of the island and converted much of its infrastructure to support the inflated armed forces. Small pockets of resistance remain, although intelligence on them is limited.
Relations between the Junta and the PRC remain hostile. Intelligence indicates that open conflict between them is increasingly likely.
Following the destruction of the Junta's research facility and communications link to the prison island, the military has gone onto high alert and begun fortifying towns across Sahrani in preparation for a ground invasion.
